Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is No-Script Suite Lite?

NoScript Suite Lite is a multi-browser addon that helps you control over Script contents and also other HTML elements such as Image, Object, Media and Style. You can easily block these items (inline and external) from your browsers toolbar popup UI. The Addon offers a handy set of functionalities to adjust the level of security in your browser. In toolbar panel UI, you can white-list a domain or website with just one click. Moreover, there are 5 HTML items, as mentioned above, to choose from in order to allow or block. Once you click on each item, the color turns to green which means it is activated. To adjust further settings, click on the options button from the toolbar panel UI, and a comprehensive options page will be open. From the settings page you have three adjustments at the top related to how the Addon works. The first settings is HTTP Observer blocking mode which uses Web Request Observer in your browser to block desired HTML contents. To read more about this method, please visit this Mozilla page. The same approach is available for Google Chrome and Opera browsers. The second option to adjust is the Content-Security-Policy (CSP) method, which adds a header with the same name to the response header delivered to the browser. If you want to get more information about this blocking method, please read this page in Mozilla. CSP method is stricter than Web Request and can block inline items easier and faster. However it is not very suitable if you want to block a single URL or item (by using RegExp rules described below). In the settings page there is also a section which lets you add custom rules with Regular Expressions. These rules can be white-list or black-list rules depending on your need. Moreover you can choose to block items originating from iFrames within a page or Top and all Frames in the page. Similarly, you can block only third-party URLs or All URLs related to a desired item (Script). Please read below FAQ items for more info.

  • 2. How do I add RegExp rules for this Addon?

To write rules, as mentioned above, please open the options page and scroll down to see the Rules table As mentioned in the FAQ title this option is only available for the latest version of the addon (0.1.5). There are 4 columns available in the table. The first column is the HTML item selector (Script, Image, Style, Object and Media). The second column is the All or Third Party selector which is discussed in the above FAQ item. Third item is the TOP or iFrame selector. Please note Top means (Top + Frames), in other words if you select Top, all URLs originating from the Top domain and all frames are being monitored. Fourth and fifth columns are for adding regular expressions rules. Forth column is for the White-list rules and Fifth column is for Black-list ones. For these rules to work, you need to write them in Regular Expression format. Any URL that matches these rule(s) will be white-listed or black-listed. Note, please place or "|" operator between each rule and add as many rules as you need. For example the following rules will white-list all URLs in the format of ".test.com/?keyword" or "sample-url.com": sample-url.com|.test.com/?keyword. Please note: when using these rules to block a content(s), it is better to disable Content-Security-Policy method and only work with HTTP Observers. This is because CSP will block items in group and does not allow a single URL or item to be blocked. A regular expression (regex or regexp for short) is a special text string for describing a search pattern. You can think of regular expressions as wild-cards on steroids. It is similar to wild-card notations such as *.txt to find all text files in a file manager. Please visit this Wikipedia page to get more info about Regular Expressions.
