Offline Chat with AI is an extension that enables you to chat with a built-in AI chatbot in your browser. In Chrome browser version 127+, the Gemini Nano is available as an offline AI engine. This extension allows you to chat with this AI agent in a very user-friendly interface. Before using the addon, please make sure to follow the below steps to enable the AI in your browser. Because this AI engine is new and under development, it is not enabled by default. Moreover, you may see some bugs, incorrect answers, or slowness in your browser. The interface has a toolbar on the left side with a few buttons (self-explanatory). You can access the previous chat list and a few settings to adjust from the left toolbar. Moreover, the interface for the app can be opened in a toolbar popup, sidebar, separate window, or a new tab. Please right-click on the toolbar button to choose one. 2. How can I enable the built-in AI engine in my browser?
Before using the addon, as mentioned above you need to enable the AI engine in your browser. There are a few steps to do that. First, please make sure you have the latest version of Google Chrome (127+) or any compatible Chromium-based browser (i.e. Chrome Canary). Next, open chrome://flags/#prompt-api-for-gemini-nano, and set it to - Enabled. Then, open chrome://flags/#optimization-guide-on-device-model, and set it to - Enabled BypassPerfRequirement. Now, restart the browser for changes to take effect. Again head to to chrome://components, find the item - Optimization Guide On Device Model - and ensure it is fully downloaded (or updated). If the version is 0.0.0.0, click Check for update. Please note that the device model is rather large (around 2GB) and may take a few minutes to fully download. So please be patient while the model is being downloaded. 3. How can I download the source code for Offline Chat with AI?
To download the source code for this extension from Chrome Web Store, it is recommended to use Extension Source Downloader. With this addon, you can download the source code as a ZIP or CRX format to your machine. If you want to download the source code from the Firefox addons store, please open the firefox download link (if available) in the Firefox browser and then right-click on the - Add to Firefox - button and select - Save Link As... - item. Choose the destination folder on your machine and then save the file in XPI format. You can then rename the XPI format to a RAR or ZIP file. Once you enable the built-in AI engine in my browser (i.e. Chrome Canary), please press the toolbar button to open the app interface. By default, the interface opens in a separate window. If you want to change the interface context, please right-click the toolbar button and choose the desired context. Within the app UI, there is a toolbar on the left side with a few buttons. At the bottom, there is a text area to type your message (prompt) and a button to submit the question with an arrow icon on the right side. On the left toolbar, there is a button at the top to show the list of previous chat sessions. Next, there is a button to show the settings pane. To create a new session please press the plus (+) button on the left toolbar. All the buttons are self-explanatory with a tooltip text. If you see any bugs or other problems in the app, please press the reload button on the left toolbar. This action will reload the AI engine and re-initiate the app in case of any unexpected behavior.
5. How does the Offline Chat with AI addon work?
As mentioned above, this app uses the built-in AI engine in your browser. The current AI engine is Gemini Nano. According to the literature, this is the most efficient AI model for on-device tasks. Once fully loaded on your device (i.e. Chrome browser) it can operate without the need for an internet connection. Because it is fully offline, you do not need to have any privacy or security concerns.
6. Can I ask questions in any language other than English?
Yes, according to our tests, this built-in AI supports languages other than English however, the best response is generated when the prompt language is English. In the future when the AI model gets updated better support for different languages will be added.
7. How can I refresh/reload the app?
Within the app interface at the left toolbar, there is a reload button. To refresh or reload the app, please press this button once. Wait for the app to load completely, then start using it.
8. How to access the settings page?
To access the settings pane, please press the settings button at the left toolbar. Currently, there are six settings to adjust. The first setting is related to Dark mode. Please mark this setting to enable the dark mode for the app interface. Setting #2 is for generating the answer either in complete format or streaming format. The default option is the streaming format where the answer is gradually completed as the AI generates the chunks. Option #3 is to fold all previous answers and keep the chat interface clean. Option #4 is for adjusting the font size in the chat section. Options #5 and #6 are two metrics related to the AI engine. Please play with these two metrics to make the AI generate better responses.
