Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is Popup Blocker Lite?

Popup Blocker Lite is a multi-browser Addon for your browser to block all annoying popups and pop-unders. Working with addon is very easy. Simply add it to your browser and start browsing as you normally do. When the addon encounters a popup, it will block it and badge icon will show the blocked item (number will increase). If you want to see notifications about the blocked popup, please enable desktop notifications from the options page. Clicking on the toolbar icon, will show a popup with five buttons. The first and the big one is the ON|OFF switch. When the addon is turned off, no popups are blocked. You can add any desired website to the whitelist and allow popups to open. Some websites are added to the whitelist by default. But you can add or remove items at any time. In order to the see the complete list of whitelisted domains, please open the options page. Within the options page there are several settings to adjust, plus the list of all whitelisted domains.

  • 2. What is the logic behind popup blocker lite?

Unlike other popup blockers, this addon is working based on the opener tab as well as the referrer and click events. When a tab, page, popup, window or similar page is opened, it will have an opener tab. Opener means a tab where the new popup is initiated from. Now, when a new window with an opener is opened, the addon considers this as a candidate for a popup (to be closed). But, a second condition should also be met before closing this window. This condition is derived from mouse click events. When you click on a page with left mouse click (not middle or right click) it tells the addon that this click is unwanted (whether you have clicked it or the page has done it automatically). Therefore, a popup coming from an opener tab with left click will be closed immediately. If any popup does not an opener tab, the addon looks for a referrer instead (which is quite similar to the opener tab but obtained with a different method). The logic behind this popup blocker is very simple and works in almost all cases. There are still some situation where the addon fails to capture the unwanted popup, but this is a work in progress. Also, some settings in the options page add extra capabilities to capture some un-detected popups. You can test those as well to see if they match your need. If in any case, by doing all the above methods, you see an unwanted popup is opened, please fill the bug report form in this page. The developer will try to upgrade the addon to block all reported un-captured popups.
