Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Vision Test?
Vision Test is a simple and easy-to-use test for your eyes. It works based on the principle of how well you can see objects at 6 metes or 20 feet away. The chart has an E character, which you need to decide the direction of the character only. With this logic, there is no need for a knowledge of English or any other languages. Therefore, this test is suitable for all ages and also individuals with different languages. Simply start the test and stand 1.6 meters or 5 feet away from the monitor. When you see a character on the screen, only decide the direction and wait for the answer to appear at the bottom of the screen. The answer is in green color and also a big font, so you can see it without any problems from distance. In general, you need to correctly answer at least 50% of the characters at each level, and if you cannot, please stop at that level and record your score. The score is number 20 divided by a number (i.e. 20/100). 20 is the distance in feet which you can see the current character. The other number is the distance which a normal eye can see the character. For example, 20/100 means the objects that you can see in 20 feet, a normal eye can see in 100 feet. In total there are 47 characters to read which takes around 5 minutes to finish. You can adjust the test speed as well, the default time to read each character is 7 seconds.
2. How to work with this addon?
As mentioned above, first click on the toolbar button to open the app UI. Then press on the play button at the top left corner and stay 5 feet (1.6 meter) away from the screen. There are 47 characters in 10 levels to show in this test. At each level, the character will rotate randomly to the right and left, top or bottom and the font size will become smaller comparing to the previous level. A single character will be shown for 7 seconds, where 3 seconds is the answer and the rest 4 seconds you will see the solution (in green color). The 7 seconds value can be adjusted as well. As the levels move forward, you will see more characters for each level. It is mentioned in the literature that at each level you need to correctly answer at least 50% of the answers to have a valid test result.
3. How can I download the source code for Vision Test?
To download the source code for this extension from Chrome Web Store, it is recommended to use Extension Source Downloader. With this addon, you can download the source code as a ZIP or CRX format to your machine. If you want to download the source code from the Firefox addons store, please open the firefox download link (if available) in the Firefox browser and then right-click on the - Add to Firefox - button and select - Save Link As... - item. Choose the destination folder on your machine and then save the file in XPI format. You can then rename the XPI format to a RAR or ZIP file. Some extensions may have a GitHub repo address, which you can use to download the source code as well. But, it may not be the latest version of the addon. Therefore, downloading the source code from the official web stores is the best option as it always gives you the latest version of the addon.
4. How can I read the scores?
As mentioned above, scores are formatted as follows: 20 divided by a number. 20 is the distance in feet (which is equals to 6 meters) which you can read this character. The other number (i.e. 100) is the distance in which a normal eye can read this character. If your score is 20/20 it means you have normal eyesight, but if the score is other than this value it means your eyesight is weaker than a normal scale.
5. How can change the test duration?
To change the duration time of the test, please adjust the timer value. By default, it is set to 7, meaning, each character is shown for 7 seconds only. In total there are 47 characters to show which results in around 5 minutes total test time. Please increase or decrease the test time based on your need.
6. For each test character how can I see the correct orientation?
As mentioned above, each test character is shown at the top with black color. After a few seconds, the answer will be shown at the bottom with a green color. The answer font is always big so that you can read the letter from a distance. You can pause the test at any time by pressing on the pause button at the top left corner of the UI.
7. What is Tumbling E vision test?
The Tumbling E vision test is a simple and commonly used eye test that is used to check a person's vision. It involves showing the person a series of letters in the shape of the letter - E - which can be rotated to face different directions. The person being tested is asked to identify which direction the - E - is facing. This test is often used to check for problems with a person's vision, such as difficulty seeing letters clearly or problems with eye muscle coordination.
8. Are there any charts other than Tumbling E?
Yes, there are many other test charts such as Snellen chart, Jaeger Eye chart, Golovin–Sivtsev table, Landolt C, Lea test, Sloan letters, etc. However, Tumbling E chart is one of the most used and popular ones for an eye vision test. This is because everybody can read the chart regarding their language or age. It is simply designed based on the direction of the E character and does not require any knowledge of English alphabets.
9. Can I trust this test and consider it as a substitute for a doctor?
Absolutely NOT! This is NOT, in anyways, a clinical test for your eyes. It is just a very basic, simple and easy test for your vision clarity and the result is good for your recording only. You should NOT rely on the result of this test at all. Please visit your ophthalmologist regularly whether or not you can pass this test.
10. In what distance should I stay away from the monitor?
As mentioned above you should stay away 1.6 meters or 5 feet from the monitor. The characters are designed to visible at this distance for a normal eye.
11. Can I change the test chart in this app?
No, as mentioned above, this app is only using the Tumbling E chart for vision test. In the future support for other charts will be added.
12. What does the level number mean in this app?
In total, there are 10 levels in this app. All the characters (47 total) are divided into these 10 levels. Each level has a different number of characters which is based on an underlying medical reason. You should answer all 10 levels to get an accurate result about your eye vision test.
13. What if I stop at a certain level and can not continue until the end?
If you cannot continue till the end (cannot read the rest of the letters) that means your eye vision score is limited to that level. At this point, you do not need to continue more, and please consult your ophthalmologist to perform future tests on your eye.
14. Is this test suitable for all ages?
As long as an individual can read the screen (decide the direction of letter E), this app is suitable for him/her.
15. What are the manual left/right buttons in this app?
The manual buttons are just for testing purposes, or if you need to take the test manually. Of course in the manual test, another person is needed to help you change the letter while you are standing at a distance. However, it is recommended to perform the automatic test at a desirable speed.
