Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is Word Editor?

Word Editor, is a free and open-source text/document editor built for all modern web browsers. Word Editor is very similar to popular word processor apps available in the market, except it works inside your browser without the need for any external plug-ins or software. You can open any text or HTML document with this add-on, and save the result as HTML format. Please note that this add-on works with HTML document extension, in other words, all the input/output files need to be in the HTML format. Currently, it does not support other famous document formats such as .doc, .docx or etc. However, you can copy text from other software (such as MS word, webpage, etc.) and paste it in the add-on (preserving all the styles). Since extensions, in general, do not have access to the hard drive in order to save files, this add-on uses the download API to gain file I/O access. Therefore, all the operations related to the file storage is happening in the default download folder in your browser. If you want to change this folder, please head to the extensions tab in your browser, search for download settings and update the default folder to where you prefer. Word Editor is built on top of the famous TinyMCE JavaScript library. Once you open the app for the first time, you will see a blank screen with a toolbar on top. Simply type/paste your document, and at the end, click on the save button (File > Save) to download the document as an HTML file in your system (default download location). Please read the below FAQs to get more info about this add-on.

  • 2. How can I work with this add-on?

In order to work with Word Editor, please click on the toolbar button to open the app UI. Once the app UI is rendered, you can either create a new document or open an existing one (as HTML). This app has almost all the functionalities of a modern word processor (i.e. MS Word, LibreOffice, etc.). It is important to note that, this app supports a variety of keyboard shortcuts as well. As mentioned above, this add-on does NOT have full access to the files and folders in your machine. It has only access to the default download folder on your system. Therefore, all the file I/O operations happen in the default download folder. You can change the default download folder in your browser from the settings tab. Weather you save the current document or not, it will be stored in the add-on memory until you create a new document. Therefore, before creating a new document, please make sure to save the active document as an HTML file format. If you have an HTML file on your machine, you can easily open it in any word processor, including MS Word software. Therefore, HTML is a very handy file extension for storing or editing documents.
